As far as I know, Tayside House is due to come down in 2010, providing the new Dundee House in North Lindsay Street is ready. Olympia will not come down until the new pool is ready and Hilton is negotiating a new site for their replacement. DCC does have the power to make a compulsory purchase order if they can't come to some agreement but everyone is reluctant to go down that route.

Hi wonkothesane.

The plans for the replacement for Olympia can be seen in the fourth post down on the page at:-

Thanks for the info. I wonder where the Hilton might relocate to though - there are not that many sites of the right size left in the city centre and I can't see them wanting to move further out.

Hi wonkothesane.

There is an alternative proposal being formulated, which would solve the problem of the unwelcoming railway station, provide a bus/rail interchange and a location for Hilton's replacement. Needless to say, this alternative does not emanate from the Planning & Transportation Department!

The City Centre & Harbour Community Council has started a consultation to formulate some alternative ideas to put to councillors before it's too late. This consultation (of anyone who's interested) will carry on through August and September and will be used to firm up proposals which will be put to councillors.

CC&HCC will have a presence in the City Centre on Saturday, 27th September, between noon and three o' clock, probably beside the dragon. This presence will have two purposes:
1. to publicise the existence of the CC&HCC to attract potential members
2. to publicise alternative proposals for the Central Waterfront area and seek views from "the ordinary people" who are in the centre on that Saturday.

Sounds interesting. I might pop along. Anything has to be better than what planning and transport have come up with!

Hi Doon, thank you for directing me to this thread it makes fascinating reading and a gives me great deal to digest.

Given your undoubted extensive knowledge of the subject could you enlighten me on one particular point that I have tried to glean from the links in the thread but reading the docs highlighted makes my head feel like its going to burst:
If my understanding is right Dock Street ( the northern boulevard) runs from Shore Terrace to its junction with Broughty Ferry Road, and is bounded on the north by the retail park, gasometer etc. and on the south by the railway line. where will the southern boulevard run given that the land south of the railway line belongs to Forth Ports and the existing properties there include the storm watertank, Camperdown Works and not forgetting our iconic scrap metal mountain (sorry I just love that word.

Is it proposed to clear all that area to allow this boulevard to be constructed

Hi BLNairn.

Look at this graphic:-

or this graphic:-

The two boulevards are the five lane Dock street between Union Street and Commercial Street to the north and the parallel anonymous boulevard to the south, between Riverside Drive at Discovery Point and the road bridge, which it goes under to join up with South Victoria Dock Road.

By the way, see the brown areas on the street plans? They are what the council defines as the development plots. They are, or will be, owned by the council, on behalf of the citizens of Dundee. Unfortunately, the council intends to do the same as they did with the docks, that is, "sell off the family jewels", as Kerter has been known to describe the philosphy. These plots will be sold off to the developers who want to buy them. It is then up to the developer to build what he likes, as long it complies with relevant planning rules and is approved by the council.

The point is... the council have no idea what will be erected - because there is NO overall, cohesive vision!
